Rebranding in Dubai: What Actually Breaks and the Order to Fix It

By Artur Gall·Aug 11, 2026·15 min read

A rebrand for a company that already trades in the UAE is an administrative project with a design project attached. The visual work runs from about AED 8,000 for a logo and colour refresh to AED 25,000 for a full visual system rebuild. The trade licence, the trademark, the signage permit, the bank records, the website redirects and the social handles are where the calendar and the rest of the budget go.

I run marketing at SkyLight Marketing in Dubai. The failure I see most often is not an ugly logo. It is a company that announced a new name in March, got the new signage quoted in April, and discovered in May that the sign cannot be permitted because the name on the trade licence still says something else. Meanwhile the old website is 404ing on forty product pages and the Instagram handle they wanted was taken by a reseller three days after the launch post.

The order matters more than the design. Here is the sequence, the paperwork, the money and the parts of your traffic you should expect to lose. One caveat before the detail: we run marketing and identity work, not government relations. Every fee and timeline below is a planning figure drawn from official fee schedules and PRO commentary, not legal advice, so confirm the current numbers with your own PRO consultant or registrar before you commit a budget or a launch date.

Brand refresh, full rebrand, or repositioning: which one you are buying

These get quoted as if they were the same job. They have different price tags, different timelines, and only one of them touches your trade licence.

What changes Licence affected Typical duration Visual work band (AED)
Brand refresh Logo, colour, type, templates. Name stays No 4 to 7 weeks 8,000 to 25,000
Brand repositioning Audience, promise, messaging, pricing story. Name and mark usually stay No 6 to 10 weeks 15,000 to 50,000
Full rebrand New name, new identity, rollout across every surface Yes 3 to 6 months 50,000 to 120,000+

Most Dubai SMEs that ask me for a rebrand need a refresh plus repositioning. Their mark is dated and their message stopped matching what they sell. Nothing about that requires a new legal name, and skipping the name change removes roughly two thirds of the administrative work.

Change the name when the old one blocks you: it is misleading after a pivot, it fails in Arabic, it collides with a registered mark, or it carries a reputation you are trying to leave. Change it for aesthetic reasons and you are buying a very expensive haircut.

How much does a rebrand cost in Dubai?

The design invoice is the number agencies quote. The rollout is the number that decides whether the project was worth it.

Line item Realistic cost (AED) Notes
Identity and strategy work 8,000 to 120,000+ Depends on scope, bilingual work, application count
Mainland trade name change and licence amendment roughly 2,000 to 3,000 Reservation plus amendment plus reissue. Notarisation and an MoA amendment push it higher
Free zone name change set by your registrar Every authority has its own schedule. Do not use a mainland figure as a proxy
Trademark, per class around 6,500 in official fees Plus agent fees. Multiply by every class you actually sell in
Signage permit reportedly from about 1,000 per year for a window sticker Fabrication is quoted separately by your sign maker
Website rebuild or migration varies widely See the redirect and recovery section below
Reprinting physical items the quiet killer Packaging, uniforms, vehicle wraps, brochures, stamps

Add those together for a trading SME with a shop, packaging, and a real website, and AED 150,000 all in is a normal landing point. Not because the logo cost that much, but because a name lives on about forty surfaces you stopped counting years ago.

For the agency fee side specifically, tiers and what sits inside each one are broken down in our guide to what a branding agency in Dubai charges. This piece stays on the operational side.

Bilingual work is the UAE surcharge nobody imports into their budget from a London template. An Arabic lockup is a redraw, not a translation. Arabic type pairing, RTL layouts for the site and the deck, and a mark that reads correctly in both scripts add real hours. Most of the brands we work with in Dubai, Fabiana Filippi, DSQ Cosmetics, Rayhaan, Toktam Jewelry, sit in premium retail, where the identity has to survive on a bilingual shopfront and a perfume box before it ever reaches a screen.

How do I change my company name on a UAE trade licence?

On the mainland the process runs through Dubai Economy and Tourism, which almost everyone still calls the DED. You reserve the new trade name, get initial approval, amend the memorandum of association at a notary where the legal structure requires it, pay the amendment fee, and receive a reissued licence carrying the new name.

The licence itself is often reissued within two to five working days once the name clears. Plan for a working week or two end to end, because the notary appointment and any translation sit in the middle. Nothing after that step can start until the new licence is in your hand.

Free zones are a separate world. DMCC, DIFC, Dubai South, IFZA and the rest each publish their own amendment fee, their own form set, and their own service level. Several require a board resolution and reissue the establishment card and the lease document alongside the licence. Ask your registrar for the fee and the SLA in writing before you commit to a launch date, and treat any blended "UAE average" you read online as marketing copy.

Two naming constraints that catch people. The new trade name has to be available and has to pass DET's naming rules, which restrict religious references, certain country and government terms, and abbreviations of personal names. And the licence name is what your signage and your invoices must carry. Running a marketing name that differs from the licensed name is the single most common reason a Dubai rebrand ends up half finished, with new social profiles and an old sign.

Once the licence is reissued, the change cascades: immigration file, establishment card, labour file, employee visas on renewal, Ejari or your lease, and your customs code if you import. Your PRO should give you that list before day one, not after.

File the trademark before you announce, not after

The UAE trademark register sits with the federal Ministry of Economy under Federal Decree-Law No. 36 of 2021, and it works on a first-to-file basis. The date on your application carries more weight than the date you started using the name.

Official fees run around AED 6,500 per class, made up of examination, publication and registration stages, with agent fees on top. Registration takes roughly six to twelve months: formal and substantive examination, then publication in the official journal, then a 30-day window in which anyone can oppose your mark.

Two practical consequences. First, run a clearance search before the naming work is finished, not after the logo is approved, because finding a conflict at the artwork stage means paying for the design twice. Second, file before the public announcement. A launch post tells every competitor and every squatter in your category exactly what name to file. That is a cheap thing to avoid and an expensive thing to fix.

Class selection is where budgets get set badly. Registering in one class and selling in three leaves the other two open. Decide with your lawyer which classes reflect what you actually sell now and what you intend to sell within two years.

Signage: the sign has to match the licence exactly

Your shopfront sign must carry the name on your trade licence, with Arabic present and correctly sized. Approvals in Dubai run through the relevant authority for your location, with Dubai Municipality applications submitted via the Smart Advertising single window at smartadv.dm.gov.ae, and DET involved on the licensing side.

Processing times differ by authority, and only one of them is officially published: RTA states a ceiling of up to twenty working days for anything touching a road corridor. DET and Dubai Municipality turnaround are commonly cited by PRO firms at around two to five and five to ten working days respectively, but neither authority publishes a fixed SLA, so confirm the current timing before you set a launch date. Permit fees are calculated per square foot of sign area plus small fixed knowledge and innovation dirham charges; a plain window sticker is reported to start from around AED 1,000 a year, with larger, illuminated or rooftop signage running well above that. Your sign maker quotes fabrication and installation separately, and a landlord or mall operator will usually have its own approval on top of the government one.

Sequence this after the licence, never in parallel. The application references the licensed name, so submitting early produces a rejection and a resubmission fee.

The admin trail nobody budgets for

Once the licence is amended, work through the records that make money move.

Your bank needs the new licence, usually a board resolution, and updated signatory documents. Account numbers and IBANs normally survive the change, but the beneficiary name on your invoices has to match what the bank has on file. Clients paying into an account whose name no longer matches the licence get the transfer bounced by their own bank's compliance desk, and you find out through an angry email two weeks later.

Then: invoice and quotation templates, purchase orders, the email signature block, contracts and any framework agreements with clients and suppliers, insurance policies, the tenancy contract, and your entry on any procurement or vendor portal your enterprise clients use. Vendor portals are the sleeper item. A mismatched name there can freeze a payment run for a quarter.

Your Federal Tax Authority record needs the same update. That is a compliance filing, not a strategic call: pass the new licence to your tax agent and have them update your registered details through EmaraTax. Hand it off and move on. It is a form, not a project.

Website: keep the domain or move it?

Keep the domain if you possibly can. Domain age and the links pointing at it are the two assets in a rebrand you cannot buy back quickly. A new name on the same domain costs you nothing in search. A new domain costs you months.

Move only when the old domain contains the old name and the mismatch actively confuses buyers. If you move, the rules are boring and non-negotiable:

  • Map every old URL to its closest new equivalent, one to one. No blanket redirect to the homepage.
  • Use 301s, not 302s, and eliminate chains. Old page to new page, one hop.
  • Keep the URL structure and the content the same on migration day. Redesigning and migrating in the same release makes diagnosis impossible when traffic drops.
  • Update canonical tags and every internal link to the new absolute URLs.
  • Submit the move through Search Console's Change of Address tool after verifying the new property.
  • Keep the redirects live for at least 180 days, and longer while Google still sends traffic through them.
  • Move email properly: new domain, new SPF, DKIM and DMARC records, old domain kept receiving for at least a year.

Expect a dip. An analysis of 1,052 domain migrations published by SALT.agency found only 27 percent recovered within 90 days. Clean migrations with unchanged content and unchanged URL structure recover faster than messy ones, which is the entire argument for keeping the two projects separate. Budget for the drop in your Q1 pipeline rather than pretending it will not happen, and put paid search behind the gap while organic re-settles.

The rebuild itself, the identity applied to templates, components and the CMS, sits with web development; the redirect map, the crawl audit and the recovery monitoring sit with SEO. Whoever runs the migration should own both sides of that handover, because the seam between them is where 404s live.

Renaming your social accounts: what carries over and what dies

Platform What happens on rename Watch out for
Instagram Username change keeps followers, posts and DMs Cooldown of 14 days before you can change it again. The old handle is released and can be claimed by anyone
TikTok Followers and videos stay Username can only be changed once every 30 days
LinkedIn page Admins can edit the name on smaller pages Pages with many associated employees need LinkedIn support to make the change. The public URL changes
Google Business Profile Name is editable, but it is the most scrutinised field on the listing Edits can trigger review, re-verification, or suspension. Reviews and photos are at stake
WhatsApp Business Number stays, chat history stays Display name goes back to Meta for review and has to correlate with the legal business name

Park the old handles rather than deleting them. On Instagram, a released username is fair game within days, and a reseller or a competitor holding your former handle will collect misdirected DMs indefinitely. Create a placeholder account on the old name and keep it.

Google Business Profile deserves its own caution. Change only the name field, do it after the new licence exists, and have the licence ready as documentation if Google asks. Do not stack a name change, a category change and an address change into the same week. That combination is what trips automated suspension, and a suspended profile means the listing drops out of Maps while you appeal. If local search is a real channel for you, read our guide to local SEO and Google Maps in Dubai before touching anything.

One more thing that quietly breaks: every @mention of your old handle in partner posts, press coverage and influencer content stops resolving. Make a list of your top twenty mentions and ask for updates, starting with anything that still drives clicks.

How long does a rebrand take in Dubai?

Phase Duration Runs in parallel with
Strategy and naming 2 to 4 weeks Trademark clearance search
Identity design and bilingual work 4 to 8 weeks Trademark filing
Trade licence amendment 1 to 2 weeks Bank and contract prep
Signage permit and fabrication 2 to 6 weeks Website build
Website build or migration 4 to 10 weeks Social and profile updates
Announcement and rollout 1 to 2 weeks Paid support for the organic dip

Three to six months, end to end, for a full name change with a rollout. The design is rarely the bottleneck. Feedback speed on your side and the sequencing of approvals are. Appoint one decision-maker before the first workshop, or add a month.

The order of operations

Print this and work down it.

  1. Decide scope honestly: refresh, repositioning, or full name change.
  2. Run a trademark clearance search on the candidate names before design starts.
  3. Check trade name availability with DET or your free zone registrar.
  4. Approve the name. File the trademark in every class you sell in.
  5. Reserve the trade name and amend the licence. Wait for the reissued document.
  6. Design the identity, including the Arabic lockup and RTL templates.
  7. Update the bank, the invoice templates, the contracts and the FTA record.
  8. Apply for the signage permit against the new licensed name, then fabricate.
  9. Build the site. Freeze content. Prepare the redirect map if the domain changes.
  10. Set a launch date. Change handles and Google Business Profile within a tight window, not spread over months.
  11. Announce. Migrate the site. Submit Change of Address if applicable.
  12. Monitor rankings, 404s and branded search volume weekly for 90 days.

Strategy, identity and the bilingual system are what our branding team builds; production of new photography and video under the new identity is handled by our in-house production team, which is why the assets and the guidelines tend to arrive together rather than three weeks apart.

FAQ

How much does a full rebrand cost in Dubai? The identity work alone runs from around AED 50,000 to AED 120,000 and beyond for a strategy-led rebrand with rollout. Add the licence amendment (roughly AED 2,000 to 3,000 on the mainland), trademark fees of about AED 6,500 per class, signage permits and fabrication, a rebuilt website, and reprinting packaging and physical materials, and a trading SME commonly lands at AED 150,000 or more all in.

What is the difference between rebranding and a brand refresh? A refresh updates the visuals and keeps the name, the mark's core equity and the trade licence untouched. It runs four to seven weeks and costs roughly AED 8,000 to 25,000 for the design. A rebrand changes the name and identity, which pulls in the licence, the trademark, the signage permit and every record that carries the company name, and takes three to six months.

Will I lose SEO rankings when I rebrand? Not if you keep the domain. A name change on the same domain has almost no search impact. If you move to a new domain, expect a temporary drop: one analysis of 1,052 domain migrations found only 27 percent recovered within 90 days. Clean one-to-one 301 redirects, unchanged URL structure and unchanged content are what shorten the dip.

How do I change my company name on a UAE trade licence? On the Dubai mainland you reserve the new trade name with DET, obtain initial approval, amend the memorandum of association where required, pay the amendment fee, and collect the reissued licence. The reissue is often done within two to five working days once the name is approved. Free zones each run their own process, fee schedule and timeline, so ask your registrar directly.

How long does a rebranding project take? Three to six months for a full name change with rollout. Roughly two to four weeks for strategy and naming, four to eight for identity including Arabic, one to two for the licence, two to six for signage permit and fabrication, and four to ten for the website. The trademark keeps running in the background for six to twelve months.

Should I keep my old domain? Yes, unless it contains the old name in a way that actively misleads buyers. Domain age and existing backlinks are the hardest assets to rebuild. If you do move, keep 301 redirects live for at least 180 days, use Search Console's Change of Address tool, and keep the old domain registered and receiving email for at least a year.

Do I need municipality approval for new signage? Yes. Commercial signage in Dubai needs a permit, submitted through the Smart Advertising single window for Dubai Municipality applications, with DET involved on the licensing side. The sign has to carry the exact name on your trade licence and include correctly sized Arabic. Commonly cited turnaround is around five to ten working days at Dubai Municipality; RTA publishes a ceiling of up to twenty working days where a road corridor is involved. Treat both as planning estimates and confirm current timing before you commit to a date.

Can I rename my Instagram account without losing followers? Yes. Changing your username keeps followers, posts and message history. You cannot change it again for 14 days, and the old handle is released for anyone to claim, so create a placeholder account on the old name the same day. Partner posts and press coverage that @mention the old handle will stop resolving, so update your top mentions manually.
